For Jean-Claude: [re]Presenting Duet for One Pianist
نویسندگان
چکیده
In 1989, composer and researcher Jean-Claude Risset's series of interactive sketches for piano and Disklavier entitled Duet for One Pianist explored the performative possibilities made available to pianists through the augmentation of emotive human musical gesture with the precise reactive and computational capabilities afforded by computer-based musical systems. As computer and musical software systems have evolved, the Max software patches created by Risset and researcher Scott Van-Duyne at the MIT Media Lab have been updated and maintained to allow the pieces to be performed using contemporary hardware and software systems. In distinct contrast, Risset's original hand-notated musical score for the work representing performance notation for the human pianist alongside a varying level of detail representing the computer’s response, itself an integral part in the work remains the authoritative representation available to performers, researchers and archivists alike. This paper outlines ongoing efforts towards the augmentation of Risset's existing score through the production of a comprehensive multi-voiced notated score edition of Duet for One Pianist, as well as symbolic and data representations for each of the eight works derived from live performance data, and a complimentary and complete series of audio and visual recordings of Duet by pianist

Duet interaction: learning musicianship for automatic accompaniment
Computer music systems can interact with humans at different levels, including scores, phrases, notes, beats, and gestures. However, most current systems lack basic musical skills. As a consequence, the results of human-computer interaction are often far less musical than the interaction between human musicians. In this paper, we explore the possibility of learning some basic music performance ...
متن کاملInterfacing Graphic and Musical Elements in Counterlines
This paper reports on initial stages of research leading to the development of an intermedia performance Counterlines a duet for Disklavier and Wacom Cintiq, in which both performers generate audiovisual gestures that relate to each other contrapuntally. The pianist generates graphic elements while playing music and the graphic performer generates piano notes by drawing lines. The paper focuses...
متن کاملRingomatic: A Real-Time Interactive Drummer Using Constraint-Satisfaction and Drum Sound Descriptors
We describe a real-time musical agent that generates an audio drum-track by concatenating audio segments automatically extracted from pre-existing musical files. The drum-track can be controlled in real-time by specifying high-level properties (or constraints) holding on metadata automatically extracted from the audio segments. A constraint-satisfaction mechanism, based on local search, selects...
متن کاملCounterlines: Studies in Interfacing Graphic and Melodic Lines
This paper describes introductory studies for an intermedia performance Counterlines a duet for Disklavier and Wacom Cintiq, in which both performers generate audiovisual materials that relate to each other contrapuntally. In the described five studies the pianist generates graphic lines while playing music and the graphic performer generates piano lines by drawing. The paper discusses our appr...
متن کاملBioComputer Music: Generating Musical Responses with Physarum polycephalum-Based Memristors
This paper introduces BioComputer Music, an experimental one-piano duet between pianist and plasmodial slime mould Physarum polycephalum. This piece harnesses a system we have been developing, which we call BioComputer. BioComputer consists of an analogue circuit that encompasses components grown from the biological computing substrate Physarum polycephalum. Our system listens to the pianist an...
